In a maiden speech delivered in parliament, Julian Leeser, managed to both unite and grip his fellow members with his story of lived experience.
The Berowra MP transported the House of Representatives back to September 1996. Then aged 20, Mr Leeser can never forget the sound of his mother coming down the hallway in a manner that was very different from the norm.
“For every death by suicide, the individual is never solely affected. Families, friends and loved ones – like myself and countless others – are left bereaved. More than 10 million Australians have felt the impacts of suicide.”
